CMI Introduces MPEG-1 Videoconferencing over one T1

Las Vegas, NV April 1999

CMI will introduce their new MPEG-1 Video Conferencing transmission system at NAB99 Booth S4677 in Las Vegas, April 19-22, 1999. This real-time videoconferencing system is one of the newest products in CMI' expanding line of Broadcast Products. It is designed for simplicity, flexibility and affordability

The MPEG Conf is a very efficient, cost-effective solution for a broad range of applications where ordinary ISDN or network systems provide unacceptable fidelity or reliable long-term usage. The MPEG Conf uses video from standard videoconferencing or higher quality video cameras and comes complete with electronic noise/echo-canceling speaker microphones. CMI's MPEG Conf System consists of an encoder/decoder unit at each end. Each station encodes and decodes MPEG-1 SIF quality broadcast images and audio in real-time on a point-to-point connection reliably 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Transmission can be T1-T1, T1-E1 or E1-E1.

Laszlo Zoltan, VP at CMI noted that "The remarkable feature of this system is the ability to provide clean, 30 MPEG-1 frames per second images with synchronized audio in both directions using just a single T1 phone line with only nominal lag. That's doing everything within just 1.5 - including overhead. No one else can do that. And it really benefits users that want superior quality, but don't have bottomless budgets!"

With this ingenious design, CMI designed in broadcast quality MPEG-1 encoders interfaced to their own unique high speed communication cards with built-in T1 modems so users just plug in the proper phone jack, camera and microphone.

The MPEG Conf is based on open "Wintel" NT technology. This unique blend of hardware and software also provides the ability to continuously monitor operations with a custom GUI front end that displays all kinds of line error conditions and statistics in real time. Monitoring and controlling can be performed locally and/or remotely allowing knowledgeable technicians to always have immediate information and control. End-users do not have to be "techies" to use the systems.

Their great price/performance ratio is achieved by building on widely available components from the leading industry suppliers. Competitors offer proprietary systems that are not upgradeable as user needs and technologies evolve. That factor restricts their customers to only one supplier's resources. Since the MPEG Conf System incorporates Windows NT as their operating system, it is further able to adapt as new devices or standards gain importance. Users can consistently incorporate the finest LAN/WAN interface from leading suppliers and no longer be locked in with a single firm's vision and engineering limitations.

CMI also produces the MPEG Shuttle series of "turnkey" MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 transmissions systems with a wide range features and configurations. It is for those who demand broadcast- quality MPEG-2, but have wanted the ability to transmit over multiple T1 lines rather than ATM. Ideal uses are: Distance Learning, Court Hearing Appearances, Video and Audio Teleconferencing, Telemedicine Consultations/Instructions and OEM.
